PREMIO PAGANINI Newsletter Quarta Corda
Premio Paganini 2006 The City of Genoa - Municipal Department for Communication and Promotion according to the proposal made by the Paganini Competition Artistic Committee chaired by Mr. Cesare Mazzonis - has issued the new rules and program for the 51st edition of the "Premio Paganini", the international competition for young violinists between the ages of 16 and 33. For the first time in the history of this competition, participants will have to play a piece that is to be written especially for the competition, in addition to the pieces that are usually played in the preliminary stages. Azio Corghi, one of the most renowned Italian composers whose fame is well known throughout Italy and abroad, is going to write a new short piece inspired by Paganini's music that semi-finalists will have to perform together with other pieces from the classical repertoire. But this is not the only important news: the winner of the "Premio Paganini" will receive a sum of 25,000 Euro (compared to 12,000 Euro assigned in the previous edition); the second and third prize winners will also benefit from increased monetary awards. The finalists will have the opportunity to perform Paganini's Concerto n. 1 in the original key of E flat major as well as in the usual key of D major. The Competition will be held in Genoa at the Carlo Felice Theatre from September 22nd to October 1st 2006 with the following schedule: the preliminary stage will take place from September 22 to September 24 2006 (in case the number of participants is high the preliminary stage could last through September 25), the semifinal stage will take place from September 26 to 27 2006, while the final stage with the Carlo Felice Orchestra will take place from September 30 to October 1, 2006.
